Speech and language services designed with the client in mind.

At Speech-Language Services of Silicon Valley, we believe that meaningful work is the most beneficial work. When therapy incorporates the most important aspects of the client’s life, the progression from practice to carryover to generalization is more natural. The therapeutic process starts with reaching for a goal, and evolves into a life-changing journey.

Speech therapy re-imagined for the modern age.

Goal-based: Small, systematic steps are designed with an optimal goal in mind. Data are consistently analyzed to determine the continued course of action to help each client reach their full potential.

Highly individualized: How therapy is delivered evolves with the client. Assessment and treatment are tailored to the individual.

Meaningful and naturalistic: Skills are more likely to be practiced and used if they are important to the client and their life. Any everyday, age-appropriate topic - from using vocabulary related to an upcoming family vacation, to spelling words from school, to photos showing a favorite hobby - is fair game. Important academic and life skills are incorporated into sessions whenever possible.

Collaborative: The client and SLP work together to reach goals, with participation and input from parents/guardians and appropriate professionals (e.g. audiologist, teacher, OT, life skills coach, etc.) as needed. Methods for carryover and generalization are explained to parents/guardians. This provides more opportunities for practice and reinforcement of learned skills outside of therapy, and the possibility of increased outcomes; you’ll know how to make a difference, and realize the positive changes as they occur.

“Clients have told me, ‘I’ve been in speech therapy before – but it wasn’t like this. This is more fun!’ or ‘I’ve never had speech therapy that actually applies to my life.’ Yes, my approach can be unconventional at times. I like to shake it up and make it meaningful to you. And I continually search out the latest research and newest techniques to stay at the forefront of client care.”

Five Categories For Therapy:

Pediatric (less than six years old): Intervention is delivered how children learn best: at play! Play-based assessment and therapy is child-directed and clinician-adapted, so work gets done while having fun. Pre-academic skills (including letter/sound recognition, early literacy skills, etc.) are introduced.

School-aged (approximately 6-13 years old): Intervention incorporates academically-relevant material and activities and drills.

Young adult (approximately 14-21 years old): Intervention focuses on academic and meaningful, real-world materials and information, and aims to build independence and positive self-esteem.

Adult (approximately 21 years and over): Intervention provides the opportunity to gain new skills, regain lost abilities, and fine-tune current abilities. The client is actively involved in developing meaningful therapy activities and materials in order to maximize therapeutic benefit.

Pairs/group therapy: Intervention in groups of two to three clients is available for those interested in moving beyond individual therapy, and for those whom communication partners would make therapy more practical. Clients are paired or grouped based on their ages, abilities, and areas of need.
